Fluoride Treatment

A quick fluoride varnish at the end of a cleaning visit strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities — especially helpful for children, teens, and adults at higher risk.

Who benefits

Children, teens, and adults with a history of cavities, dry mouth, or active gum disease typically benefit most. The application is quick, comfortable, and included as part of a routine cleaning when it’s the right call.

How it works

Fluoride strengthens the outer enamel of your teeth, making it more resistant to the acids that cause cavities. The varnish takes only a few moments to apply and continues working in the hours after.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

Who needs fluoride treatment?
Children, teens, and any adult with a history of cavities, gum recession, dry mouth, or weakened enamel benefit most. If you have not had a cavity in years and brush well, your hygienist may decide it is optional for you — we will discuss it at your visit.
Is fluoride safe?
Topical fluoride at the doses used in dental varnish is well-studied and recommended by the American Dental Association. The amount applied is small, stays on your teeth, and is not swallowed in any meaningful quantity.
How long does fluoride varnish take?
About one minute to apply at the end of your cleaning. We ask you to avoid hot drinks and crunchy food for about 30 minutes afterward so the varnish can fully bond to your enamel.
Does insurance cover fluoride for kids?
Most dental plans cover fluoride for patients under 14, and many cover it for adults with higher cavity risk. Virginia Dental Club members receive it as part of preventive coverage.
