Oral Cancer Screening

A short, comfortable screening at every comprehensive exam. Catching changes early is what makes oral cancer most treatable.

What we look for

Dr. Youn visually examines the soft tissues of your mouth, tongue, gums, and throat, and gently feels for unusual lumps or thickening. The screening takes only a few minutes and is included as part of your comprehensive exam.

Why it matters

When oral cancer is caught early, it’s far more treatable. The whole point of regular dental visits is to detect problems — from tooth decay to oral cancer — in a timely manner so they can be addressed when they’re still small.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

What is involved in an oral cancer screening?
It is a quick, comfortable visual and physical exam — Dr. Youn looks at your tongue (top, sides, and underside), the roof and floor of your mouth, your cheeks, lips, and gums, and gently feels the lymph nodes around your jaw and neck for any lumps or swelling.
How often do I need to be screened?
Every comprehensive exam — typically twice a year. Smokers, heavy drinkers, and patients with a history of HPV-related cancers may benefit from more frequent screening.
What are early signs of oral cancer?
Persistent mouth sores that do not heal in two weeks, white or red patches inside the mouth, unexplained bleeding, numbness, a lump in the cheek or neck, or a hoarseness that lingers. If you spot any of these between visits, give us a call.
Does it cost extra?
No. Oral cancer screening is included in your comprehensive exam at no separate charge — for insurance patients, Virginia Dental Club members, and self-pay patients alike.
