Tooth Extractions

When a tooth is hopelessly damaged or decayed and can’t be saved, gentle removal is the right next step — with a clear plan for what comes after.

When extraction is the right choice

We always try to preserve as much of your natural tooth as possible. Sometimes a tooth has decayed too far, fractured below the gum line, or developed an infection that won’t respond to root canal treatment. In those cases, removing the tooth and planning a thoughtful replacement is the kindest path.

A comfortable visit

Local anesthesia keeps you comfortable throughout. Dr. Youn will explain each step before it happens. After the extraction, you’ll get clear at-home instructions for the first 24 hours and a follow-up plan if it’s needed.

What comes next

Depending on which tooth was removed and your goals, the conversation about a bridge, a dental implant, or a partial denture starts before the extraction — not after — so the plan feels coordinated.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

When is a tooth extraction necessary?
Most often when a tooth is too damaged by decay or fracture for a root canal, when severe gum disease has loosened it, when a baby tooth is blocking a permanent one, or when wisdom teeth are crowded or impacted.
How long does an extraction take?
A straightforward simple extraction usually takes 20 to 40 minutes from numbing to discharge. Surgical extractions (impacted teeth, broken roots, wisdom teeth) take longer — we will tell you what to expect at your consult.
What is recovery like?
Plan on a quiet day after your extraction. Take any prescribed medication on schedule, apply ice for the first 24 hours, eat soft foods, and avoid straws or smoking for at least 72 hours so the clot can form. Most patients are back to normal in two to three days.
Can I replace the tooth right away?
Often, yes. Bone grafting at the time of extraction preserves the site for a future implant, and in some cases a same-day implant is possible. Ask Dr. Youn at your consult what is right for your tooth.
