Emergency Care

Broken Tooth Repair

A cracked or chipped tooth is a common emergency. Stay calm, call us, and try to save any broken pieces.

Save the pieces

If a large piece of your tooth has broken off, it may be possible to bond it back on. Place the pieces in a hard protective carrier and bring them with you to the office.

Until you can come in

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water. Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek to ease swelling. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen can help with pain.

What treatment looks like

Depending on the size of the break, treatment may be cosmetic bonding, a crown, or in some cases a root canal followed by a crown. We’ll evaluate, walk you through the options, and get you out of pain quickly.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

Should I save the broken piece?
Yes. Place the fragment in a small container of milk and bring it with you. Some breaks can be reattached if the fragment is intact and brought in promptly.
How is a broken tooth fixed?
Treatment depends on how deep the break goes. A small chip in the enamel often needs only smoothing or composite bonding. A break that exposes dentin or pulp may need a crown, and one that has reached the nerve usually needs a root canal followed by a crown.
Do I need to come in if it does not hurt?
Yes — sometimes the worst breaks do not hurt right away because the nerve is exposed and overwhelmed. Untreated, they can become infected within days. Call us the same day even if you feel fine.
Will my insurance cover emergency repair?
Most PPO plans cover crowns, fillings, and root canals at standard rates. Virginia Dental Club members receive 20% off most procedures. We will give you a written estimate at your visit.
