Toothache Treatment

A toothache is your body telling you something needs attention. Call us — we’ll help you get out of pain and figure out what’s causing it.

While you’re on your way

Over-the-counter anti-inflammatories like ibuprofen can ease swelling and pain. An ice pack on the affected side helps too. Over-the-counter analgesics like Orajel can numb the area temporarily.

What might be going on

Toothaches can come from a deep cavity, a cracked tooth, an infection in the pulp, gum disease, or even a sinus issue that’s referring pain to your upper teeth. Figuring out which one matters — an X-ray and a careful exam point us to the right treatment.

Don’t wait it out

Many toothaches get worse if they’re ignored, and infections can spread. If you’re unsure whether it’s urgent, give us a call — we’d rather hear from you than have you tough it out at home.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

What can I do for a toothache before my appointment?
Rinse with warm salt water several times a day, take ibuprofen as directed (if it is safe for you), use a cold compress on the cheek if there is swelling, avoid hot drinks and hard chewing on that side, and call us right away. A persistent toothache means something needs treatment — it will not resolve on its own.
When is a toothache an emergency?
Severe, throbbing pain that wakes you up at night; pain accompanied by swelling, fever, or a bad taste; pain that radiates to your jaw, neck, or ear; or any visible swelling on your face. Call us immediately for any of these — and go to an emergency room if you cannot reach us and have facial swelling near your eye or affecting your breathing.
Is a toothache always a cavity?
No. It can be a cracked tooth, an infected nerve (pulpitis), an abscess, gum disease, an exposed root, or referred pain from a sinus infection or grinding. We diagnose with an exam and X-rays before recommending treatment.
Do you see emergency patients without an appointment?
Yes — call us first so we know you are coming. Most days we can fit emergency patients into the same day. New patients are welcome.
