Emergency Care

Lost Filling or Crown

When a filling or crown comes off, the tooth underneath is exposed. Replacing it quickly keeps things from getting worse.

If your crown came off intact

Save the crown — rinse it gently and place it in a small container. Often we can re-cement the same crown if the underlying tooth is healthy. Don’t try to glue it back on with anything from the drugstore.

If a filling fell out

The exposed tooth may be sensitive to hot, cold, and sweet. Avoid chewing on that side until you can come in. Replacement is usually a single-visit appointment.

Frequently Asked

Common questions

Can a crown be put back on?
Often, yes — if the crown itself is intact and the tooth underneath is healthy. We clean the crown, check the fit, and recement it. If the tooth has new decay or has fractured, a new crown may be needed.
What can I do until my appointment?
Pick up temporary dental cement (Dentemp or similar) at the drugstore. Rinse the crown, fill it with cement, and seat it back on the tooth. Avoid chewing on that side and call us within 24 hours.
How urgent is it?
Within 24 to 48 hours is best. The longer the prepped tooth is exposed, the more likely it is to fracture or develop decay — and the longer the surrounding teeth have to drift slightly, making the original crown harder to reseat.
Will I need a new crown?
Sometimes the existing one can be recemented; sometimes a new one is needed. We will give you a clear answer (and a written estimate) at your visit.
